Anxiety or ADHD?
Assessment, Treatment and Medication
Is it Anxiety or ADHD?
So many people come to me wondering "What's wrong with me.. do I have ADHD, Anxiety or Am I on the Spectrum?" It’s common to wonder, “What’s really going on here?” That’s where my specialized individual counseling services come in. I focus on assessing and treating anxiety disorders (think Generalized Anxiety, OCD, Panic Attacks) while also determining if ADHD might be the underlying or coexisting issue.
Among the mental health counseling services I provide in outpatient setting, one of my core competencies is testing and treating for ADHD. Note that ADHD is often referred to as ADD in adults where the focus is on things like Inattentiveness, persistent overwhelming feelings, irritability and emotional dysregulation, not hyperactivity.
Understanding the Overlap Between Anxiety and ADHD
The line between anxiety and ADHD is often blurred, as both conditions share similar symptoms. Difficulty concentrating, feeling restless, and being easily overwhelmed can be signs of either—or both. However, the root causes of these symptoms are different, and effective treatment depends on an accurate understanding of what’s driving them.
For example, anxiety related to ADHD often stems from challenges with executive functioning—things like managing time, staying organized, or following through on tasks. This form of anxiety is distinct from Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), which is more about persistent worry and fear. Through careful assessment, I help uncover what’s at the core of your struggles so we can create a clear and actionable plan.
How I Help: Clinical Assessment and Tailored Support
Using a blend of testing, observation, and in-depth clinical interviews, I guide clients through the process of identifying whether their primary concern is an anxiety disorder, ADHD, or both. My approach includes:
Specialized Clinical Tools: I use evidence-based assessments designed to differentiate between anxiety and ADHD, giving you clarity about your mental health.
Tailored Treatment Plans: Based on your unique needs, we develop a strategy to address symptoms and enhance your overall well-being.
Collaborative Care: I work closely with psychiatric nurse practitioner Seth Colvin, a compassionate provider who offers medication management services. Together, we ensure that your treatment is well-rounded and adjusted as needed to meet your goals.
*please note, I am unable to provide assessments for Autism Spectrum Disorders. If you feel this is something you might have, I recommend starting with your primary care physician or seeing a local psychiatrist for testing.
Collaborative Care Approach
The Collaborative Care Approach integrates assessment, counseling, and medication management to provide comprehensive support for your mental health. Through this approach, we work together to ensure an accurate diagnosis and develop a personalized treatment plan tailored to your unique needs. Seth and I work collaboratively with you to achieve your goals and make meaningful progress in your journey toward well-being.
